Manhasset means "island neighborhood" in the Munsee language spoken by the indigenous inhabitants, the Matinecock Native Americans, and was adopted in the mid-19th century. The region had previously been called "Little Cow Neck" since the arrival of English settlers in the early 17th century, given the presence of quality pasture for raising cows.

Standout Feature
The vibrant, destination shopping scene, namely along "Miracle Mile", a stretch of Northern Boulevard made famous in Billy Joel's hit song, It's Still Rock and Roll to Me, and most notably at Americana Manhasset, a 60-store, open-air mall anchored by some of the most famous names in fashion and luxury goods, once known as "The Fifth Avenue of Long Island"
Manhasset is an unincorporated community (or "hamlet" in local parlance) and Census Designated Place located on Long Island in New York State within Nassau County in the Town of North Hempstead. The hamlet is part of the Manhasset Union Free School District, which it shares with the neighboring Munsey Park, Plandome, and Plandome Heights, as well as with parts of nearby Flower Hill, Plandome Manor, and North Hills. Commuter rail access to New York City is available from Manhasset Station.
Manhasset has a charming, small-town feel with an unassuming downtown, yet is also the site of a luxurious, high-end shopping mecca that draws destination shoppers. The hamlet's location along Manhasset Bay also adds a nautical vibe that allows for plenty of outdoor recreation both on and off the water. Residents love the close-knit, spirited community and very good public schools, while the quick and convenient transit access to the city remains a top draw.
