Summit likely derives its name from the early 19th century, when the area's first railroad was constructed and described as passing through "Summit Hill", reflecting the elevated surroundings amidst the hills of the Watchung Reservation. During the Revolutionary War, the area was called "Turkey Hill" due to the abundance of wild turkey.
