Syosset derives its name from "Suwasset," the name of the area given by the indigenous inhabitants, the Matinecock Native Americans, which in their native language of Munsee means "place in the pines."

Syosset is an unincorporated community (or "hamlet" in local parlance) and Census Designated Place located on Long Island in New York State within Nassau County in the Town of Oyster Bay. The hamlet is part of the Syosset Central School District, which it shares with the neighboring hamlet of Woodbury and the eastern portion of the village of Muttontown. Commuter rail access to New York City is available from Syosset station.
Syosset is a bucolic hamlet that exudes nature.
