Upper Saddle River is named for the Saddle River, a tributary that runs through the borough and was named by early Scottish-American settlers after the village of Saddell in Scotland. The "upper" moniker was added to differentiate itself from the neighboring borough to its south, Saddle River.

Upper Saddle River is a borough located in northern New Jersey within Bergen County. The borough is co-terminus with the Upper Saddle River School District (covering pre-kindergarten through 8th grade) and part of the Northern Highlands Regional School District (covering 9th through 12th grades), which it shares with nearby Allendale, Saddle River, and Ho-Ho-Kus (also identified by Blue Jay Towns). The borough is served by the Upper Saddle River Library. Commuter rail access to New York City is available from Ramsey Route 17 Station and Ramsey Main Street Station in neighboring Ramsey.
