Jericho was named in the late 17th century by English Quaker settlers after the ancient Biblical city of the same name. Previously, the area was known as "Lusum", which means "the farms" in the Munsee language spoken by the indigenous inhabitants, the Matinecock Native Americans.

Standout Feature

The nearby lush and picturesque green spaces, exemplified by the Old Westbury Gardens in neighboring Old Westbury, the former country estate of an heir to the Carnegie Steel Company fortune that is now a public museum encompassing over 70 acres of landscaped gardens, and over 160 acres of open fields and woodlands

Jericho is an unincorporated community (or "hamlet" in local parlance) and Census Designated Place located on Long Island in New York State within Nassau County in the Town of North Hempstead. The majority of the hamlet is part of the Jericho Union Free School District, which it shares with parts of neighboring Old Westbury, Brookville, and Muttontown, while a small portion of the hamlet's eastern end is part of the Syosset Central School District, which it shares with neighboring Syosset. Commuter rail access to New York City is available from Hicksville station in neighboring Hicksville.

Jericho is a serene yet vibrant hamlet set amidst a bucolic landscape. Verdant facilities that offer high-end recreational pursuits such as horseback riding and polo grace the surrounding region with a regal air. And destinations like a more than 100-year old cider mill provide rural charm. But the biggest draw has long been the highly-prized public schools, which remain the center of community life. In addition to the stellar schools, residents love the highly-regarded public library, as well as the numerous international dining and grocery establishments.
